  • Title:
Final development and commercialisation of a UK-developed innovative air suspension system for vehicles
  • Start date:
    8 mei 2018
  • End date:
    10 mei 2019
  • Summary:
A UK product development company has developed a novel air suspension system for cars, motorbikes and commercial vehicles which can also be retro-fitted for after-market applications. The system improves the ride comfort and is more cost effective to manufacture compared to the conventional hydraulic dampers. The company is looking to co-operate with engineering and equipment manufacture companies for final development and commercialisation via licensing or technical co-operation agreement.
  • Description:
A UK product design and development company has developed advanced suspension system using a broad spectrum of historical and new innovations.
The new air suspension system can replace conventional telescopic shock absorbers and the suspension springs. It can also be adapted for kinetic energy recovery.
The new air suspension system offers easy adjustment of the ride height and the ride quality - soft or hard according to exact preferences - by use of an electronic interface providing a smoother performance than coil sprung suspensions. The improvement is due to the air springs absorbing vibrational energy more effectively.
The air suspension system delivers improved load carrying capabilities and provides for an even keel when carrying extra weight in the boot and passengers in the cab. In addition, the system reduces the risk of bottoming out, rear end sag and excessive tyre wear.
The air suspension system has been designed to be retro-fitted to all cars, commercial vehicles and motorbikes. It is adjustable for bump / rebound that is passively or mechatronically controlled. For original equipment manufacturers a non-adjustable system also offers increased cost savings in manufacture and installation.
The company is looking for engineering and equipment manufacture companies who want to adopt the mechanism for improvement of their existing suspension products, mostly from the automotive industry. The company offers technical co-operation for the final stage of the development or is ready to license out to companies wanting to commercialize the product independently.
Partner Sought
  • Type of Partnership Considered:
    License agreement, Technical cooperation agreement
  • Technical Specification or Expertise Sought:

The company is looking to complete the development with Tier 1 or 2 equipment suppliers or with engineering companies looking to invest in new automotive products for world class manufacturing. Depending on the contractual agreements, the company can license out the product for subsequent commercialisation or jointly finish the product development and share the patent.
The company is happy to partner with companies with experience in European and national research and innovation grants.

  • Advantages and Innovations:
The new air suspension system has a number of advantages over the conventional hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers:

    1. Ease of adjustment under bonnet.
    2. Reduced asset and handling costs because no suspension springs are required.
    3. No coil spring seat and top retainer together with cushion pads required.
    4. Reduced asset costs because no oil and handling of it is required.
    5. Improved ride comfort.
    6. Improved vehicle handling.
    7. Reduced tyre wear.
    8. Reduced installation costs.
