Multivariate analysis with Fourier Transform Near Infra Red analysis for process modelling and process engineering: new tool for technical cooperation in various industries such as pharmaceuticals, industrial biotechnology and chemistry
  • Start date:
    7 mei 2018
  • End date:
    10 mei 2019
  • Summary:
A German R&D company is specialized in analysis tools enhancing process design and engineering capabilities for process improvements and optimization including model based predictive process controls. The company is now looking for companies from the specialty chemicals, pharmaceuticals, industrial biotechnology and chemistry sector to apply these tools and transfer the know-how under technical cooperation, research cooperation and services agreements.
  • Description:
The German R&D company is specialized in multivariate analysis and modelling, FTNIR (Fourier Transform Near Infra Red Analysis) with applications in PAT (Process Analytical Technologies), process modelling, process engineering and design. These process tools enhance process design and engineering capabilities for process improvements and optimization including model based predictive process controls. The company’s process experiences were gained through project participation and consulting in wide industry applications as specialty chemicals, polymers and petrochemicals. The knowledge and competencies are widely used for process improvements and process optimization studies.

A mature solution at commercial level already exists for petrochemicals and refineries applications. The company now intends to apply the tools and transfer the experiences in new industry applications. Thus new solutions at commercial level for specialty chemicals, pharmaceuticals, industrial biotechnology, biochemicals and chemicals processes are going to be developed.

A partner at industry level is sought for a joint development project under a technical cooperation or research cooperation agreement. Through further technical co-operation and research the know-how will be transferred to new industry applications such as in pharmaceuticals, industrial biotechnology, biochemicals and chemical process technologies. This creates innovation with new industry solutions.
Furthermore, the company is looking for services agreements with SMEs to complement their technical services for projects.
Partner Sought
  • Type of Partnership Considered:
Services agreement, Technical cooperation agreement, Research cooperation agreement
  • Technical Specification or Expertise Sought:

The R&D focussed company is looking for companies from the specialty chemicals, pharmaceuticals, industrial biotechnology, biochemicals and chemicals processes sector for research and/or technical cooperation agreements.
Sought partners will work in joint development or research projects. Joint development work or research project participation can mean finding or developing new technology solutions, and technology transfer at commercial scale.

Furthermore, the German company is searching for SMEs as supply chains to large manufacturing industries for services agreements to complement their technical services for projects at local or international level.

  • Advantages and Innovations:
Generic process models as through Partial Differential Equations are mathematical approximations of the process behaviour. Multivariate analysis and multivariate models provide more robust modelling capability of process behaviour as data is captured from running plants, pilot plants or lab and hence it reflects true operating behaviour of the plant such as due to variabilities in thermodynamics, equipment capacities as reactors and separators, reaction and kinetics, mass and heat transfer. Online sensors and FTNIR analysis provide a window of opportunity to understand true process behaviour and hence can provide scope for process improvements and optimization such as improving yields, enhanced reactivity but more consistent with quality. Improvements on yields and quality, while at the same time reducing energy consumption, offers competitive cost advantages to manufacturers.
In few cases online sensors can become prohibitively expensive due to high maintenance and operating costs involved, or harsh and corrosive nature of the process involved.
Soft sensors can be a cost competitive alternative option. Such soft sensors can be utilized for multiple purposes as predictive models, online process analyzers, and can be interfaced to a model based predictive controller.
