  • Summary:
A UK SME who designs and produces highly innovative wheelchair wheels with a unique suspension solution seeks profitable, established, international distributors and stockists with an in-depth knowledge of assisted-living devices, particularly manual wheelchairs and those which can be adapted to integrate power attachments.
  • Description:
The UK SME has designed and manufactured a unique wheel for adult manual wheelchairs which has a markedly improved suspension system compared to traditional wheelchair wheels. With a background in mechanical engineering and industrial design, the company has developed a wheelchair wheel where the suspension is incorporated within the wheel itself, rather than as a wheel that attaches to a suspension system. Wheelchair users, especially those who face lengthy periods sat in a wheelchair, experience levels of vibration that can affect health and quality of life. Exposure to high levels of vibration can also increase levels of muscle fatigue and nerve damage, which can be severe for those with spinal injuries.
After four years of research and development, the product was brought to market, with rigorous testing showing the wheel reduced vibration by between c.50% to 75% compared to a normal wheelchair wheel. The reduction in vibration means the wheelchair user experiences less pain and fatigue and is able to travel further in comfort. The system can be manufactured for a range of wheelchair wheel sizes and wheelchair types, such as day chairs and off-road models.
The suspension system is manufactured in the UK from carbon fibre composite material and a frame of die-cast aluminium, which makes it sigificantly lighter than a traditional wheelchair wheel. It is available in a range of colours to enable the purchaser to chose a colour to customise the wheelchair and reflect their personality.
The route to market is via a network of stockists and distributors of speciality mobility equipment and accessories, and the company is looking to expand its international distributor network by finding new partners in Europe, South America and Asia.
Partner Sought
  • Type of Partnership Considered:
    Distribution services agreement
  • Technical Specification or Expertise Sought:

The company is seeking to partner with profitable, established distributors and stockists specialising in the mobility equipment sector. The partner should have a track record of growing sales and profits in its territory and be integrated into the network of mobility supply and support organisations in the market. For the selected partners, full training and product support will be given. The product is undergoing constant development and user enhancement testing, so a fresh offering to the market will always be available for the distributor/stockist to promote.

  • Advantages and Innovations:
This innovative product was four years in development, undergoing rigorous testing before coming to market. Each variant of the product (style, size) undergoes a 10,000 mile factory test before production starts. The unique suspension system has been proven to reduce vibration by up to c.75%, thus reducing the users level of muscle fatigue, pain, and potential nerve damage, enabling longer periods to be spent in the wheelchair and further distances to be travelled in comfort.
The materials used in the manufacture of the wheel mean it is lighter than a normal wheelchair wheel, enabling greater manoeuvrability with less physical effort. With the wheel being available in a range of colours, it allows the user to reflect their own style and personality, which is important for wheelchair users who have to spend many hours a day in the chair.
