An online energy and communication autonomous sensor platform is to be developed that will enable users to choose relevant sensors and then collect data via internet for >10 years at ultra-low installation costs. Potential users, e.g. from heating, ventilation, smart building or infrastructure and a data management company are sought for research agreements.
  • Description:
    Digitization of environmental, personal and machine data is one of the big topics in the early 21st century. In the internet of things (IoT), a multitude of transducers (sensors, actuators, displays…) act as a bridge between the real and cyber world. Boston Intelligence estimates a total number of 19 billion devices by 2019 within the IoT. This number is only feasible if the devices are affordable, have low installation effort and do not require regular maintenance; in short they must be autonomous. Autonomy means to relinquish wired power and data transfer while at the same time the devices can run maintenance free for more than ten years.

    To enable this, a German university spin-off offers an energy autonomous device (EAD), a combination of energy harvesting and storage that provides more autonomous energy at a higher flexibility than conventional energy harvesting can.

    The company is planning to submit a project in the Eurostars call. Within this project an online configurable transducer platform will be developed that combines a multitude of transducers with an EAD and long-distance wireless data transmission. A smart data warehouse management will allow comfortable handling of the data streams.

    It will enable future customers to pick the combination of sensors necessary for their use case and then collect data via the internet for more than ten years at ultra-low installation costs.

    Potential end-users include manufacturers of heating/venting/air conditioning (HVAC), urban infrastructure, security/surveillance systems, virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) devices and others.

    The present consortium consists of three German partners: The university spin-off, a non-university centre for interdisciplinary R&D and a university institute for communication networks.

    Non-German industrial partners are sought for research agreements:
    • A data management / cloud computing company to contribute to the data management warehouse.
    • End-user from HVAC, building automation, smart building to help with specifications and test and apply the developed technology
    • End-user, e.g. traffic infrastructure manufacturer to help with specifications and test and apply the developed technology
